The Mato Grosso swamplands
(Pantanal Mato-grossense), a plain which covers
88,803 sq. miles (230,000 sq. km) in the western
portion of the center of the country, is covered
in tall grasses, weeds, and widely dispersed
trees. Large patches of it are submerged during
the rainy season. The Amazon Basin and the
